“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.”
This is
the seventh time Jesus has used “I AM” as a prequel before a statement. Jesus
has also claimed to be “The Bread of Life”, “The Light of the World”, “The
Door”, “The Good Shepherd”, “The Resurrection and the Life”, and “The Way, The
Truth, and The Life”. It’s easy to see what these are to us: Jesus was the
bread because he provides; the light so we can see; the door so we can enter;
the shepherd to guide us; the resurrection and life to save us; the way, the
truth, and the life so we can understand (at least a little); and now he claims
himself to be the vine.
But
what does a vine do for us? Well, if we move on with the analogy, we become the
branches to the vine… thus we gain life, we stay connected, and we grow. And in
turn, he expects us to be fruitful, or the vinedresser will come and he will
prune us away, or at least parts of us.
Today,
I will find the life I need in the Word of God; finding verses in the Psalms to
hold me up and memorize.
