“And they continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine
and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
This
sentence is a description of the early church, and the way they would
fellowship together. They would eat, pray and study together. I’ve found that
the most important word in this sentence to me is “continued”. They didn’t do
it once and check it off their list of “Important Christianity To-Do’s”, or set
just one or two days a week to drag together – it was a continual process.
The
early church spent time together as we so often don’t do. In fact, we have
garage door openers specifically designed to keep us from having to do so. We
lock doors instead of arms.
We
need to learn how to stop closing up and being “independent Americans” and
instead, learn to spend time with each other. I personally need to spend
continual time in fellowship and prayer with others. Today, I will spend time praying
with at least one person – and will continue to do so for the rest of the week.
